Greek Life

Hope College offers Greek Life and this was a big part of my college career. Since Greek Life carries a certain stigma, one thing that the college works towards is trying to make Greek Life a more positive environment, both for the community of Hope College, but also the surrounding Community of Holland. I have held many roles both as a member of an individual fraternity as well as a member of the Interfraternity Council.

Alpha Kappa Pi Fraternity

The fraternity I was a member of, was a smaller and newer organization on campus. It was an organization dedicated to brotherhood as well as service. I held multiple leadership roles within the organization, being Vice President, Social Chair, and GO Chair. As Vice President, I worked to advise the President in his roles in the organization, worked to help executive board communicate effectively with each other as well as with the organization, and I planned many brotherhood events for the organization to build us closer together. As social chair I worked mainly with event planning and collaborating with different organizations on campus to put on a variety of events, for example a bake sale to raise money for the Helen DeVos children's hospital in Grand Rapids. Lastly as GO Chair I worked to bring new members in as brothers to the fraternity in a uplifting way, rather than the typical "pledge" system that most colleges have. I worked again to plan events and to help teach new members what it meant to be a member of the fraternity, and Greek Life as a whole.

Interfraternal Council

Interfraternal Council(or IFC) is a self governing body of Greek Life. Here each organization at the school has three representatives that attend weekly meetings and actively work to make Greek Life the best it can be on campus. We worked to put on fundraisers as well as many informational sessions on Greek Life as a whole. In my time as a member of IFC I had two major leadership roles. First, I was elected to the role of Secretary. As Secretary, I was responsible for recording information from the individual weekly meetings, as well as communicate that information to the other members of IFC. Later on I was elected to the position of Vice President, where I assisted the President with his roles, as well as being an on campus face for Greek Life, trying to make if the most uplifting and positive entity possible for the community of Hope and the Community of Holland. Lastly I was part of the Greek Life Judicial Board, where I worked with staff and students to deal with problems that arise throughout the year related to Greek Life, and again try to make the entity the most positive and uplifting thing it can be.
